Working conceptually and encouraging inquiry and play-based learning enables children to be the authors of their own learning. |
I believe the 21st century demands that we are competent learners who are capable of critical, analytical and creative thinking. Learning based on sophisticated concepts that are timeless, universal and transferable belong at the heart of the curriculum and professional learning. This enables children and teachers to revisit their thinking and develop their theories of the world further. Working conceptually and encouraging inquiry and play-based learning enables children to be the authors of their own learning.
Developing a school culture with a growth mindset, I lead staff to use a framework such as the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile enabling children and staff to learn with head, health, heart and soul set. Further adding the visual and performing arts and physical education enables children to represent their ideas and thinking in many different ways.
I facilitate a school community to develop entrepreneurial and systems thinking. This involves using action-based learning around meaningful projects that may link the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Results include the school making active contributions to society while children are developing the knowledge, skills and dispositions they require in their futures.
As I believe we are life-long learners I provide opportunities for staff engagement in long-term project-based learning that encourages them to analyse and develop their own teaching practice through research and inquiry. This also enables staff to experience the learning that is expected in classrooms refining teaching methodologies. Developing professional learning community practices that encourage the use of formative and summative assessments by educators to inform instruction and develop a community of learning with families, is key to educational success.
Similarly, families can be engaged in learning with their children at home as well as participating in events and learning within the school that focus on innovation, inquiry and entrepreneurship. This creates a true future focused learning environment.
